Bürgerhospital Frankfurt
CSMM – architecture matters transformed the reception area of Bürgerhospital Frankfurt into a welcoming and healing environment that prioritizes patient well-being through natural materials, lighting, and thoughtful design elements.
For over 240 years, the Bürgerhospital Frankfurt has stood for highly qualified medical treatment, compassionate nursing care, and modern medical equipment. Humanity and transparency define the mission statement of the hospital, which boasts the highest birth rate in Germany. To do justice to the hospital’s values, management desired to redesign the previously functional but uninviting reception area into a place where everyone feels welcome.
Before CSMM was commissioned as a consulting planning firm, it had been impossible to reconcile functionality and design. In addition to a clear design philosophy, an analysis of patient and staff needs was lacking. CSMM interior designer Nina Fitzthum therefore commissioned a patient survey to better assess their needs and perceptions. The functional requirements were defined with the back office and reception staff and then coordinated with the hospital management. In the resulting reception area, which features a service desk and information center, the necessary sterility of the space is concealed by natural materials and colors. Sculptural, round pendant lights define the space and transform it into a pleasant, warm light, atypical of a hospital. CSMM’s design philosophy is clear: people are the focus. While previously the space was primarily defined by functionality, logistics, and sterile conditions, the design was now consciously geared toward the well-being and recovery of the patients. Studies show that a positive spatial atmosphere reduces stress, accelerates the healing process and strengthens the sense of security.
Arrive and feel good
Although the interior structure remained unchanged, the transformation is impressive due to the comprehensive design concept alone. The small-scale nature of the existing spaces was broken up to open up the visual axes. Wooden slats surround the core area, room dividers and seating niches provide privacy, and plants improve the indoor climate. The deliberately placed accents draw the eye and facilitate a sense of arrival. A curated color and material concept, as well as custom-made joinery solutions, combine function and atmosphere.
The integrated seating niches create a sense of security, and the built-in tables serve not only as storage space but also as a stand-up aid. A snack area opposite shortens waiting times.
The entrance area is the hospital’s calling card – here, the clinic’s credo is visibly lived from the very first moment. “We’ve noticed that not only has the mood of incoming patients improved, but the new design has also made workflows smoother, more efficient, and better.” Step by step, the Bürgerhospital is thus developing into a place that not only lives its values, but also radiates them.
