Nectar Allergen Clinic
BHDM Design transformed Nectar Allergy’s New York clinic into a patient-centric space, blending warmth and modernity with hypoallergenic materials and innovative design solutions.
When Nectar Allergy set out to open its flagship clinic in New York City, it engaged the BHDM Design team to design a sensible office for patient treatment. The renovated 3,405-square-foot clinic is a paradigm shift in healthcare design, blending a hospitable, inviting atmosphere with the due trustworthiness and professionalism of a treatment center.
The new flagship was transformed from a sterile medical office into a client-centric practice with meticulous planning and creative utilization of spaces. BHDM consulted the Nectar experts to foster a safe, comfortable environment for sensitive allergy patients in its selection of hypoallergenic materials from fabrics and upholstery to the bespoke millwork throughout the space.
Challenged by a stringent timeline and limited start-up budget, BHDM employed strategic, high-impact design decisions that set a new standard in healthcare environments. Guided by Nectar’s brand ethos, the practice steers from conventional clinical aesthetics with a harmonious blend of warmth and modernity.
Upon entry, guests are welcomed at a custom, free-form reception desk. In a graceful nod to the droplet silhouette of Nectar’s logo, curved decorative and architectural features follow suit with added softness and whimsy. Above, the original grid ceiling is elevated with warm wood panels and a decorative fixture casting extra ambient light. The waiting area has been reimagined with custom hypoallergenic, upholstered sofas and organic accents through Design Within Reach coffee tables, RBW Lighting sconces, botanical displays made by Caroline Byrne of Brazen Botany, and decor with home-like comforts.
Past reception, a variety of treatment typographies prioritize client comfort with gentle materials and the continued, calming palette of Benjamin Moore’s Steamed Spinach and warm Chantilly Lace. Designated “challenge” rooms with clear windowed walls allow nurses to observe patients during allergen tests, while closed-off, single-patient, and family exam rooms provide for private treatments.
In an adjacent lounge, built-in laminate millwork provides an allergen-friendly alternative to white oak and offers a flexible space for guests. Outfitted with Four Hands leather accent chairs, Design Within Reach upholstered poufs, and a TV, the lounge provides a semi-private leisure space for guests, in addition to the private family exam room clad in Hill & Horizon wallpaper from Magnolia Home. Each of these areas has been designed to fully adapt to the clinic’s dynamic needs in servicing both in-person and virtual clients.
Throughout the new flagship space, a curated art package serves the dual purpose of educating patients about allergens. Paper artwork cloches, framed prints, and displayed botanicals provide approachable learning opportunities throughout the clinic.
