Chongqing Angel Women’s & Children’s Hospital Renovation
John Li Studio‘s project in Chongqing draws inspiration from Tang Dynasty poetry to blend modern medical spaces with cultural symbolism, using natural elements, colors, and narratives for a poetic atmosphere.
You ask me when I can come back but I don’t know,
The pools in western hills with autumn rain overflow;
When by our window can we trim the wicks again,
And talk about this endless dreary night of rain?
《Written on a Rainy Night to My Wife in the North》is a letter written by Tang Dynasty poet Li Shangyin to his wife in Chang’an when he was living in a foreign land in Chongqing. It expresses his feelings of loneliness and deep longing for her, as well as his appreciation for life and persistence in love. Designers use poetry as inspiration to express the emotions of ancient people towards love and life in the pursuit of modern medical spaces, becoming the underlying cultural logic. By borrowing natural elements and cultural symbols from poetry and deconstructing them through contemporary aesthetics, we create a poetic and picturesque atmosphere of the modern East.The renovation of Chongqing Angel Women’s & Children’s Hospital mainly includes three parts: Medical Aesthetics Center, Reproductive Medicine Center, and Maternal and Child Care Center. Using the poem “Endless Rain” to correspond to medical beauty, “Window Candle” to correspond to reproductive medicine, and “Autumn Pool” to correspond to maternal and child care, and using light blue, dark red, and light green as the theme colors for each region, the design is integrated with local culture and natural environment, emphasizing the narrative nature of the space. It also provides Chongqing Angel with an opportunity to rejuvenate, allowing the brand to once again be at the forefront of history.
