  • To meet the growing needs of their practice, as well as the healthcare needs of underserved members of their community, Medical Eye Specialists determined it was essential to build a new ophthalmic clinic and ambulatory surgery center. With this in mind, a two-story 19,822 SF ophthalmic clinic and ambulatory surgery center was planned for development on a site near the new hospital helping to anchor a healthcare corridor in Bozeman, Montana, improving the community’s access to care.

The building sits lightly in the landscape with views to the Bridger Mountain Range, providing space for future growth without impeding this natural feature. The building embraces biophilic design principles through daylighting and visual connection with nature, with emphasis on key patient and staff areas. The reception desk incorporates an artistic rendition of the range further enhancing the interior space with the amazing exterior views. As you traverse the space, the peace and beauty of the range’s alpine glow are also reflected in the clinical suite through the use of color and light to promote peace and tranquility.

The clinical floorplan was designed with people who will experience and use the space. Patient and staff flow—from check-in and reception to work-up and exam—was streamlined to improve access to care and efficiency. The flow also helps patients understand where they are in the care process and improves their ability to navigate the building with ease. The staff areas were designed to allow for greater collaboration between providers and clinical team members through shared off-stage work areas and office spaces.

Views of the surrounding landscape connect occupants to the natural environment as well as provide abundant natural light in key patient spaces, such as the pre-/post-operative care space. The mechanical systems are connected to a building management system to ensure the highest level of performance and were subject to enhanced commissioning in compliance with U.S. Green Building Council recommendations.

The exterior of the building showcases locally sourced materials (brick) which were applied in high-traffic and severe weather impacted areas. The onsite water retention is integrated with native landscaping to reflect the specific beauty of this environment; improve the quality of air, soil, and water; and promote a culture of conservation.
