  • area / size 215,278 sqft
  • Completed 2025
  • Location Wellington, New Zealand,
  • Type Hospital,
  • Engaged as the design lead and in close collaboration with local partners, HSPC developed a comprehensive, phased master plan for the revitalisation of the hospital. The goal was to create a high-acuity, seismically resilient facility serving the community and setting new benchmarks for healthcare infrastructure across Australasia.

As one of the first base-isolated private hospital facilities in New Zealand, this innovative design is a proud milestone in the evolution of health care architecture. The new hospital provides a comprehensive range of services, including seven operating rooms, two cath labs, a CSSD, 70 inpatient beds, ICU,HDU, medical imaging facilities, a specialist centre, consulting suites, and essential back-of-house services.

The redevelopment of Wakefield Hospital is a technically complex project, incorporating the latest base isolation technology to ensure the facility exceeds New Zealand’s seismic National Building Standards (NBS) code requirements. The integration of this technology makes Wakefield Hospital a pioneering example of resilience in healthcare design.

A key feature of the redevelopment is the transformation of the hospital’s entrance and overall presence. The redesigned entry spine not only enhances the building’s aesthetic appeal but also supports a seamless and intuitive way finding experience, ensuring a positive and efficient journey for patients and visitors. Inside, sophisticated finishes and a focus on salutogenic design principles foster a healing environment, contributing to a state-of-the-art health care facility that sets new standards for excellence in the region.
