St Luke’s ElderCare Bukit Batok Central
ID21’s St Luke’s ElderCare Bukit Batok Central in Singapore harmoniously blends community spirit with modern rehabilitation technology, creating a nurturing environment where seniors thrive in a vibrant, village-inspired setting.
A Modern Kampung: Nurturing Connections and Well-being in Bukit Batok
Imagine a place where the warmth of community blends seamlessly with cutting-edge technology, all designed to empower seniors to live their best lives. That’s precisely what St Luke’s ElderCare (SLEC) and ID21 have created in the heart of Bukit Batok – a visionary project that redefines elder care.
Following the success of the award-winning LifeLabTM@SLEC, St Luke’s ElderCare (SLEC) approached ID21 with an exciting challenge: to design and build a new day rehabilitation centre that captures the spirit of a traditional “kampung,” or village, while embracing modern advancements in rehabilitation. The result? A unique wellness ecosystem spread across two interconnected spaces nestled beneath the familiar blocks of public housing.
Block 229: Where Community Comes Alive
Step into Block 229, and you’ll immediately feel a sense of belonging. This space is more than just a place for physical therapy; it’s a vibrant hub where friendships blossom and social connections thrive. Picture seniors belting out their favourite tunes at karaoke, creating beautiful art together, or staying active through culinary workshops and exercise classes. It’s a space where they can share stories, find support, and feel truly connected to their peers – a modern-day village square.
Block 228: Embracing Technology for Enhanced Rehabilitation
Just a stone’s throw away at Block 228, a redefinition of rehabilitation is taking place. This state-of-the-art facility brings advanced robotics therapy directly to the community. Here, the elders receive personalised rehabilitation plans guided by expert therapists, combined with the power of cutting-edge technology to help seniors regain strength, mobility, and independence. This isn’t just about treating ailments; it’s about empowering individuals to age in place with confidence and dignity.
Weaving the Kampung Spirit into Design
How do you connect two distinct spaces and create a cohesive experience? We drew inspiration from the idea of a “kampung”, which means “village” in Malay, and refers to a close-knit community with a strong sense of neighbourliness, where people look out for each other and share readily. We also tapped into Bukit Batok’s reputation as a tranquil haven known for its lush greenery and nature parks.
Unifying design elements include soft pink tones that echo the existing exterior and nature-inspired wallpaper, creating a sense of visual harmony and a warm invitation. Light wood and indoor greenery bring the calming essence of the outdoors inside, fostering a sense of tranquillity and well-being. Abundant natural light floods the spaces, creating an uplifting and energising atmosphere. From the gentle arches of the windows to the inviting reception counters and lighting features, rounded forms create a soft, welcoming vibe that puts everyone at ease.
The end result is a unique project that reflects the power of community, the potential of technology, and the importance of creating spaces that promote healing and active ageing. It’s a place where seniors can connect and feel taken care of, surrounded by the warmth and support of their modern-day “kampung”.
