Victorian Maxillofacial Surgeons Clinic
Amicus designed the Victorian Maxillofacial Surgeons Clinic in Melbourne harmoniously blending functionality and tranquility to elevate the patient experience while exceeding healthcare design standards with architectural sophistication.
Project Vision
Victorian Maxillofacial Surgeons sought to challenge conventional healthcare design by creating an elevated patient experience that seamlessly integrates function with form. The practice envisioned a space where patients would experience calm and tranquility from arrival through treatment, while optimising clinical workflow across all areas—from reception and consultation rooms to specialised procedure spaces. The directors required a design partner capable of interpreting their vision and translating it into a sophisticated, functional reality.
Design Approach
Our design process began with comprehensive stakeholder interviews, capturing the directors’ vision and aspirations to inform conceptual development. This collaborative foundation enabled continuous client integration throughout concept design and detailed design phases. We employed high-quality 3D visualisation to provide the client with tangible representations of the final outcome, ensuring design intent was clearly communicated and refined.
Technical Excellence
Proactive planning and risk assessment during design phases proved essential to project success. Our team identified critical building constraints early, enabling efficient navigation of potential challenges. Key technical considerations included:
– Structural Engineering: Floor load restrictions required specialised analysis for five dental chairs exceeding 200kg each, necessitating precise structural placement and reinforcement strategies.
– Fire Safety Compliance: The unique layout and limited egress points required engagement with specialist fire consultants to develop performance-based solutions meeting Australian Standards and National Construction Code requirements without compromising design integrity.
– Medical Environment Standards: Full compliance with AS/NZS 3003:2018 was achieved through implementation of body-protected electrical circuits, minimising electrical hazards during patient procedures and ensuring the highest safety standards for medical environments.
Outcome
The result is a sophisticated medical practice that exceeds functional requirements while achieving refined aesthetic goals. The project delivered on schedule without deviations, creating a specialist dental environment that prioritises patient experience through thoughtful architectural design and technical excellence.
The completed practice represents a successful synthesis of clinical functionality and architectural sophistication, establishing a new benchmark for healthcare design that delivers on both operational efficiency and patient wellbeing through considered spatial design.
