  • The renovated Radboudumc Amalia Children’s Hospital in Nijmegen is a future‑ready, family‑centred facility that transforms a twenty‑year‑old building into a playful, calm and highly functional paediatric hospital. Using minimal interventions, EGM created a five‑storey environment that promotes family integrated care with inviting daylight‑filled plazas, a specialised NICU, a new outpatient clinic and a homely Ronald McDonald living room.

Two major atria form the heart of the building: a double‑height ground‑floor plaza serving the clinics and a park‑like second‑floor “healing environment” adjacent to the wards, populated with organic play objects, a small theatre and direct access to a roof garden and conservatory. Warm colours, natural materials and greenery reduce stress and aid recovery. All inpatient rooms are single‑occupancy with private sanitary facilities and overnight space for a family member; the NICU includes 15 private rooms to support skin‑to‑skin contact and parental involvement.

The layout supports staff with clear organisation, short walking routes and digital tools that enhance care delivery. Overall the project balances high clinical standards with an atmosphere of wonder and comfort for children and their families.
