  • Gensler worked closely with Chesapeake Urology to design a new ambulatory surgery center and clinic in Salisbury, Maryland.

Known for their specialty expertise and high quality care, Chesapeake Urology Associates is the Mid-Atlantic region’s premier urology group. Through its expansion program, Chesapeake Urology Associates has grown from a two-person to over 800-person organization and now operates 28 medical offices and 18 AAAHC-certified ambulatory surgery centers. The expansion aims to meet the needs of a growing and aging population with new facilities strategically located in close proximity to its patients. Additionally, extended hours in this new clinic increase convenience and facilitate the growth of Chesapeake Urology’s expanding brand presence.

Chesapeake Urology teamed with Gensler on the design of its new Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) in Salisbury, which includes a clinic. Working seamlessly within a tight footprint, the clinic is designed to accommodate 11 exam rooms, ultrasound services and two infusion bays, as well as a lab and associated support. The ASC includes two procedure rooms and one interventional operating room as well as scope processing. Both clinical areas of the plan take advantage of the shared office and staff support services housed between. A shared goal of understanding patient and staff flow informed the programming of the complex space with universal exam rooms and flexible space in the procedural and recovery areas to improve visibility and safety through sight lines.

The existing 13,000 sf building underwent modifications to replicate the Chesapeake Urology brand in a welcoming, hospitable environment for patients, physicians, surgeons and staff. Chesapeake Urology’s level of care for their patients is expressed through a design that prioritizes comfort and privacy. Warm materials, various seating configurations, and acoustic and visual separation in the waiting room creates a welcoming experience for patients. Indirect lighting and carpeting in waiting areas create an aura of quiet softness, while the decor features layers of industrial sculptural fixtures to embrace height at entry points and create moments of positive distraction. Glass and tile materials in consult spaces respect patient dignity and exude cleanliness. Accents of gold throughout are an ode to the primary brand color.
