John Li Studio utilized an elegant color palette and a thoughtful layout for the VMISS Clinic in Kunming, China.

VMISS is a medical establishment integrating medical treatment of gynecological diseases, private care for women, post-birth recovery and medical cosmetology.

Yunnan is a province with the most ethnic minorities in China where everyone adept in sing and dance. As the saying goes: In Yunnan, every leaf can dance and every stone can sing. The challenge of this project is how to combine interior design with local culture to give rhythm and melody to the space and provide vitality to the space with cultural connotation.

According to Huang Di Nei Jing-a medical ancient books and records in China, “A brilliant doctor treat diseases that have not yet occurred”. It means the wise doctors are often able to intervene in the disease early before it starts to prevent diseases and keep people healthy. In VMISS, we care more about women’s health than about disease. The challenge faced by us is how to get rid of the cold and stereotypical image of traditional medical institutions meanwhile create a warm and comfortable as well as fashionable and pleasant space.

At the early design phase, the design team went to Xishuangbanna, Yunnan to collect design inspiration. The design team members watched peacocks at close range and were attracted by the peacock spreading its tail and peacocks’ elegant gesture of strolling idly in a courtyard in the subtropical rain forest. The peacock is the embodiment of good luck in Yunnan and the symbol mark of Yunnan. Based on the concept of “Spirit of Peacock”, the designers extract the peacock’s pose and color to be used for interior design to reflect the essence of the women’s clinic and explore VMISS’s culture and values.

The designers extract various decorative elements subject to Yunnan subtropical style to create an elegant artistic atmosphere by combination with healing peacock blue.The female customers can communicate with the doctor easily without obstacles about secret sorrow here.
