  • McMillan Pazdan Smith designed the Downtown Emergency Department Addition for Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital in Greenville, South Carolina.

Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital opened its emergency department addition in November of 2021. The ED was designed for fast treatment, ease of travel, and prioritized access for a rapidly-growing patient population. This efficient and personalized emergency care facility includes pods that expand or contract to meet demand, fast-track rooms to separate less acute care cases from higher acuity emergencies, holding rooms for patients waiting on results from laboratory work, behavioral health rooms, and two resuscitation rooms with an anteroom that supports them. Triage is set up to maximize patient flow with all rooms having a front and back door.

In addition to senior-friendly aesthetics throughout, there is also equipment to allow imaging and testing to be completed without leaving the ED. The brick exterior matches the existing campus while aluminum accent panels and glazing promote daylighting and enhanced visibility.
