The Iowa Clinic – South Waukee Campus
RDG Planning & Design‘s innovative project in Waukee, Iowa blends cutting-edge medical services in a patient-centric facility, introducing Iowa’s first outpatient cardiac catheterization lab.
The Iowa Clinic’s South Waukee Campus brings cutting-edge medical treatments and a patient-centric care facility to Waukee, Iowa and surrounding communities. Strategically located in Waukee, Iowa’s Kettlestone development along Grand Prairie Parkway, RDG’s design for this new forward-thinking project introduces a unique blend of clinical services, ambulatory surgery and Iowa’s first outpatient cardiac catheterization lab under one roof, setting a new standard for patient care in Iowa.
In Iowa, heart disease claims 167 out of every 100,000 people each year; the state currently ranks 19th in the nation for heart disease deaths. In 2019 alone, The Iowa Clinic recorded more than 54,000 patient visits for cardiology services, emphasizing the pressing need to enhance access. Cardiac catheterization has become an important diagnostic and intervention tool for cardiologists, and technological advancements mean that today, the procedure is minimally invasive. Thus, it is now possible to perform cardiac catheterization in an outpatient setting, making it more accessible and affordable for patients. This first-in-Iowa facility seamlessly fits routine and secure cardiac catheterization procedures into the many other services offered in an ambulatory surgery center.
Hosting multiple medical specialties under one roof allows patients convenient access to care. The two main entrances and separate registration and waiting areas emphasize that the MOB and surgery center are distinct entities. Yet, they have back-of-house connections and shared mechanical and electrical spaces that allow for operating efficiencies. The exterior brick and other design choices incorporate aspects of The Iowa Clinic’s building design brand, with additions like metal, stone-look porcelain and wood-look composite panels conveying a modern aesthetic that fits the surrounding community. A sense of welcome, easy access and clear wayfinding are priorities throughout the campus. Inside, features like a modern, warm grey-tone color palette and stone and wood-like materials connect to the exterior design.
The facility’s 35,000 SF medical office building and a 21,000 SF ambulatory surgery center are designed for expansion, with built-in adaptability to respond to the growing health needs of Waukee’s residents. Current offerings include services ranging from urgent care and imaging to family medicine, orthopedics and pediatrics. The new facility continues a partnership between RDG and The Iowa Clinic, following collaborations on several local clinics in surrounding communities, including Grimes, Adel, the North Waukee – Alice’s Road dermatology clinic and a new specialty infusion center in West Des Moines.
