The Limited Stay Unit (LSU) at Children’s Minnesota underwent a dramatic transformation, evolving from a dated 1990s design to a vibrant, contemporary space. The renovation embraced a Minnesota river theme, incorporating sunny abstracted tree canopies, undulating blue “water” flooring patterns, and cheerful lakeside graphics. These elements not only create a warm, engaging environment but also enhance wayfinding, making it easier for patients and families to navigate the unit.

The updated 9000-SF unit now features 14 comfortable rooms with a fresh aesthetic that balances sophistication with playful touches, catering to both young patients and their families. A key design focus was incorporating natural light into the overnight rooms, despite the unit’s limited exterior walls. The racetrack layout, with large-scale motifs, highlights essential areas like nurse stations, family lounges, and nutrition areas, creating an experiential quality of walking alongside a river.

The design process involved significant input from the Children’s MN Family Advisory Board, ensuring the needs of families and patients were central to the renovation. The result is a space that meets modern care standards while fostering comfort and well-being.

Amenities such as a fully stocked children’s playroom and a relaxing family nutrition lounge further support families during their stay. The redesign not only modernizes the LSU but also addresses capacity challenges, allowing Children’s Minnesota to serve more patients effectively. This transformation has created a safe, clean, and inviting environment that aligns with the hospital’s goals of providing exceptional care and support.
