  • Petite Krewe is a pediatric dental office in New Orleans designed by Hattie Sparks to challenge the expectations of a traditional clinical environment. Located within a historic 1890s building, the project balances preservation requirements with a distinctly residential and highly expressive interior approach, creating a space that feels welcoming, comforting, and rooted in place.

Rather than drawing from typical healthcare precedents, the design is informed by residential interiors and the character of New Orleans itself. The palette references classic French Quarter hues, layered through botanical wallpapers, painted millwork, and saturated tile. Custom murals, inspired by the flora and fauna of southeast Louisiana, bring a sense of whimsy and storytelling to the private exam rooms, offering young patients a calming and engaging visual experience.

A key objective was to soften the functional requirements of a dental office without compromising performance. ADA compliance, clearances, and clinical infrastructure are seamlessly integrated into the design through thoughtful detailing and material selection. Upholstered seating, custom millwork, and tactile fabrics in the waiting areas contribute to a sense of ease, while maintaining durability and cleanability.

The project also highlights collaboration with local artisans and makers. Custom benches and millwork, hand-installed wallcoverings, and bespoke upholstery reinforce a sense of craftsmanship and connection to the surrounding community. Historic constraints informed several design decisions, including preserving original architectural elements and adapting decorative details to meet tax credit requirements while maintaining visual continuity.

Throughout, the design prioritizes the patient experience, particularly for children who may feel anxious in medical settings. By replacing clinical sterility with warmth, color, and narrative detail, Petite Krewe offers a more human-centered approach to pediatric care—one that reflects both the spirit of New Orleans and the evolving role of design in healthcare environments.
