As SYNLAB Nigeria continues to grow its network of laboratories and blood collection centres, this project explores how diagnostic spaces can evolve alongside the country’s changing healthcare needs. Working with A.A Design & Development, the ambition was to create environments that do more than support clinical functions. The focus was on making everyday healthcare settings feel reassuring, intuitive, and genuinely welcoming.

Diagnostic laboratories are often associated with anxiety and unfamiliarity. This project set out to challenge that perception by creating spaces that feel calm, dignified, and easy to navigate. Warm, tactile materials, thoughtful planning, and a clear visual language come together to encourage confidence from the moment patients arrive.

Reception areas were conceived as more than waiting spaces. They provide a gentle transition into the clinical environment, with open layouts, uncomplicated circulation, and carefully considered lighting that helps the spaces feel comfortable without compromising operational performance. Bespoke furniture and a restrained material palette reinforce the SYNLAB identity while allowing the experience to remain centred on the patient rather than the brand.

Located in fast-growing and underserved communities, these facilities demonstrate the value of design as part of the healthcare experience itself. Drawing from the comfort and warmth of hospitality environments while respecting the demands of clinical practice, the project presents a different way of thinking about diagnostic care—one that feels approachable, efficient, and deeply human.

Outcome: The result is a scalable design language that can be applied across SYNLAB Nigeria’s expanding network, transforming routine visits into more positive experiences while strengthening patient confidence and supporting a consistent, recognisable identity nationwide.
