  • E4H Environment for Health Architecture created the design for the modernization of the Eastern Maine Medical Center located in Bangor, Maine.

A multi-phase master plan for Eastern Maine Medical Center (EMMC) was developed to address the inpatient needs of the Eastern Maine Medical Center campus. Founded in 1889, the original building still stands on the campus. The master plan focused on creating opportunities for the hospital to adapt to emerging technology and modern procedures while accommodating increased demand on a limited footprint. Strategic steps are being taken to create new facilities that will meet current needs and allow for future growth while being mindful of the existing infrastructure and local history.

Implementation of Phase One of the master plan, involves the replacement and upgrade of 110 beds, and 14 ORs. As a Pebble Project member, the modernization project at EMMC will contribute to the study of evidence-based design and incorporate the very latest advances in patient-centered care.

This $308M multi-phased modernization project for Eastern Maine Medical Center (EMMC) includes 361,000SF of projects that provide state-of-the-art operating rooms, consolidated heart care, updated space for laboring moms and their babies, new neonatal intensive care space, and increased private rooms for patients. The project utilizes evidence-based design and the principles of patient-centered care in its approach to interior design. Each private patient room is designed to accommodate family members and provide a warm and relaxing atmosphere for healing. Patient bathrooms include a European shower concept which increases accessibility for patients with limited mobility.

Family lounges are included on inpatient floors creating a place of retreat and contemplation outside of the patient room. Each lounge includes a fireplace and panoramic views of the river in a home-like setting. These elements were also integrated into the main lobby where a stone fireplace and interior plantings echo the Maine landscape and create a warm welcome for patients, families, and staff. Throughout the hospital special attention was paid to sourcing local, low-maintenance, and sustainable materials for finishes as well as creating opportunities to utilize natural light and energy efficient fixtures.
