Saskatchewan Hospital North Battleford – Integrated Mental Health & Correctional Facility

Kasian Architecture Interior Design and Planning were tasked with designing a space that was both secure and comfortable for Saskatchewan Hospital North Battleford’s Integrated Mental Health & Correctional Facility in North Battleford, Canada.

The Saskatchewan Hospital North Battleford – Integrated Mental Health & Correctional Facility (SHNB), is a brand new facility providing various mental health services under one roof. SHNB provides day programs to its clients and contains 284 inpatient beds. Inpatient beds range from being fully secured, to acute, and to community reintegration units where clients live in smaller homes as they transition back into the community. Many clients residing at SHNB leave the facility during the days to attend to jobs in the community; at CCCAMH the clients would come to the facility to receive further support as they transition back into their communities or require step-up support. Both facilities have shared spaces for clients and staff, and incorporate common areas that are deinstitutionalized and conducive to healing.

At SHNB, Kasian’s design approach has been to integrate required security into the design rather than applying security to a design. This integrated design approach has been proven to enhance flexibility, reliability, and safety. Close attention has been given to all aspects of the design, constructability and functional adjacencies to address both the physical
and operational philosophies. The overall aesthetic of the space has been designed so that it supports all demographics and age groups of North Battleford. The design currently supports the culture of the area, the aboriginal population and the aging population. The bariatric population is accommodated by use of ceiling lifts, which also aid in decreased injury to staff in general.
