HGA designed the open, bright, and communal Fowler Medical Plaza in Fowler, California.

Adventist Health Central Valley and Valley Children’s Healthcare partnered to create Fowler Medical Plaza as a new destination health, wellness, and community center serving the California Central Valley community through all stages of life, from birth to elderly care.

The Medical Plaza includes 47 exam rooms, six procedure rooms, shared support spaces, central registration, conference rooms, community spaces, offices, imaging, lab, and pharmacy serving pediatric specialty care, maternal fetal medicine, pediatric primary care, family medicine, adult specialists, and dental. The site is prominently visible off Highway 99, surrounded by flourishing agriculture fields and orchards near the Sequoia National Forest and Sequoia National Park.

HGA designed a bright and open interior atrium and reception area that welcomes visitors where structural columns disguised as “trees” brace a glass canopy roof that fills the space with natural light. Video/interactive technology engages children while colors, shapes and light features provide visual and sensory interest. A large Outdoor Courtyard offers safe space for children to play, where sunlight, fresh air, and plants and trees provide biophilic respite.

Additional community features include a coffee bar and café setting to blur the lines between work and play during patients’ stay. Flexible furniture allows for community events, farmers markets, and gatherings for education and entertainment.

The clinical spaces feature a subdued color palette in the adult area, with colors and shapes representing local orchards and agriculture. Regionally inspired artwork enhances wayfinding, showcasing local artists, photography, and historical elements.
