  • HDR completed the full renovation for the Etobicoke General Hospital to modernize the care in Toronto, Canada.

For over four decades, the Etobicoke General Hospital has provided care for its community. Its recent transformation into a state-of-the-art facility for the 21st Century will enable its care providers to deliver patient-inspired healthcare for years to come.

The new hospital tower adds approximately 250,000 square feet including services urgently needed by the community as well as a new central entrance, atrium and amenity space for patients, visitors and staff.

    New and expanded  services  include:

    • A new emergency department almost twice as large as the former space and with dedicated diagnostic imaging and mental health emergency services
    • A combined cardiac, respiratory and neurodiagnostic clinic
    • A maternal newborn unit with 10 private birthing suites, two operating rooms, and a 10-bassinette Level II neonatal intensive care unit
    • A critical care inpatient unit four times the size of the former space
    • An ambulatory procedures unit that offers advanced minimally-invasive procedures so patients can be discharged on the same day and recover at home
    • Newly expanded modern patient rooms with lots of natural light designed for comfort and patient autonomy
    • Key features of the new patient tower give patients expanded control of their care environment. In most areas of the new tower, lights can be dimmed to desired levels. Some rooms even have lighting that will turn on as you enter and off as you leave.
    • Room temperatures are controlled through an automated system but can be adjusted manually as well. Some patient rooms are equipped with privacy glass that can be changed from opaque privacy to non-privacy mode at the flick of a switch.

The existing campus has been redeveloped to include a generous multistory atrium, entrance and drop off area that includes patient reception, retail, food services and indoor amenity spaces adjacent to outdoor gardens. The new entrance links the existing facility to the new tower expansion as well as the adjacent wellness center.
