  • HDR completed the Integrated Care Center for HealthRIGHT360 to have one building for all aspects of health and wellness in San Francisco, California.

The new Integrated Care Center (ICC) on Mission Street is the latest addition for HealthRIGHT360, an integrated healthcare nonprofit that provides comprehensive medical and social services to address community needs. The 50,000-square-foot facility establishes a new presence for HealthRIGHT360 in the neighborhood and introduces a new model for delivering healthcare and wellness programs to low-income and homeless people — the first of its kind in California.

HealthRIGHT360 was founded on the belief that healthcare is a right, not a privilege, and provides services to more than 12,000 homeless and low-income clients in San Francisco and almost 40,000 in the state.

Through the adaptive reuse of a five-story, concrete garment factory originally constructed in 1917, the facility is a catalyst for the revival of the surrounding neighborhood; and resides in a large and central area, well-served by public transit. As a community partner, the ICC provides an abundance of services, including primary care, outpatient mental health services, outpatient substance use disorder treatment, housing referrals, dentistry, pharmacy services, employment counseling and training referrals, computer literacy classes, and many more. It also offers many educational opportunities, including a Five Keys adult charter high school, art therapy and employment counseling.

Spaces are filled with abundant character; a uniqueness born from the values of the organization and the history of the building intended to reflect a desire to strengthen what is there without covering it up. This mirrors the approach that HealthRIGHT360 uses to help patients with addiction — the goal is not to give up, but to work with people to help them overcome barriers to health and wellness. Similarly, our design team strengthened and modernized the building without obliterating its character.

The main entry point is the Intake Department on level one, an open atrium with the HealthRIGHT360 brand bright-red walls, plants and comfortable seating areas in waiting rooms. The lobby features a welcome desk and display areas, pharmacy, bike storage, showers, the Rock Medicine program office and building utility spaces.

The second level contains the open resource center and computer learning center. These areas are used for education and job search activities.

The third level is the behavioral health services where counseling and group therapy services are rendered.

The 5th floor contains an outpatient care clinic with 10 exam rooms, airborne infection isolation room and test laboratory. The clinic also has a 3-chair dental clinic where basic services can be offered to the clientele.

As a Federally Qualified Health Center, HealthRIGHT360 accepts Medi-Cal and Medicare and is open to all clients. Its “whole person” approach to care means new clients are assigned a team of professionals to conduct all treatment plans collaboratively — a philosophy reflected in the building: Level-by-level up to the rooftop garden, the facility is equipped to deliver an integrated-care package.
