  • ffbk Architekten designed a relaxed and welcoming environment for Merian Iselin Klinik in Basel, Switzerland.

The former workshop was completely renovated and converted into an elegant state-of-the-art physiotherapy clinic. Rather than hiding any references from the past, ffbk Architects’ transformation project proudly highlights the industrial character of the premises. The large-sized factory windows, the display of the original load-bearing structure in the entrance hall and the exposed technical installations in the hallways reinforce the industrial character of the facilities. Industrial references are visible even in the bathrooms and cloakrooms, which are clad with small-format white tiles reminiscent of workshop interiors.

The interior design concept of the project is essentially centred around three main materials and a carefully selected colour scheme. Smoked wild checker tree (a local species of mountain ash), Pietra Grey Marble and brushed brass are used throughout the project, but are particularly present in the entrance area where they shape the large-sized reception counter. The high-quality timber and the elegant marble elements combined with the matte brass visually complimented by the presence of two main colours and one contrasting colour. A grey base colour is used across all walls and ceilings to create a homogenous appearance and to provide a neutral background for the other design elements. In addition, a dark grey colour is applied to doors, windows, internal glazing elements and baseboards. This colour palette is further enhanced by a denim blue fabric, which offers a strong contrast to the other colours and elegantly compliments the warm brown tone of the wooden surfaces.

The new premises are not primarily reminiscent of a hospital or clinic. A relaxed, intimate atmosphere was created, which has a positive effect on the visitor of the physiotherapy or nutritional advice units while providing a modern work environment for the medical staff.
