  • Gresham Smith designed a whole person health facility with BayCare HealthHub Bloomingdale in Valrico, Florida.

In response to the ever-evolving healthcare landscape, BayCare Health System envisioned a new model of healthcare delivery—one where convenient access to health and wellness services can prevent symptoms before acute care is required. BayCare engaged Gresham Smith to help plan and design a holistic health environment where the surrounding community can see their doctor, exercise, shop and enjoy a healthy meal in one spot.

The 108,000-square-foot, two-story BayCare HealthHub Bloomingdale in Valrico, Florida, integrates traditional health care services such as primary care, pediatrics, adult rehabilitation, behavioral health, urgent care, imaging and laboratories with wellness activities including fitness classes, nutrition education and like-minded retailers to promote healthy living. The 21-acre campus also includes a half-mile walking trail and a serenity garden, and hosts a monthly farmer’s market.

To give patients a streamlined experience from the moment they walk through the front door, several central registration stations serve as the sole check-in points for all health and wellness services in the building. After checking in, visitors aren’t asked to sit in a waiting room—they’re escorted to their exam room by a friendly BayCare team member.

Located in the first floor lobby, the BayCare TechDeck is staffed by health technology coaches who provide support for a variety of wellness devices and applications that help patients monitor activity and steps, body fat percentage, heart rate, sleep habits, weight and body mass index, and more.

To bring the BayCare brand to life, a blue planar wall extends through the façade and runs vertically through the entire building brings and strategically placed brand colors enhance wayfinding. The lobby’s large, open staircase promotes physical activity, while expanses of windows in the fitness center bring the outdoors in.
